Redhat 8.1 - Linux Operating System Installation


This tutorial will guide you on how to perform a Server with GUI installation of REDHAT 8.1 step by step, using the binary DVD ISO image.

1. Download Redhat 8.1 ISO

Register as Personal Account on Red Hat website then download rhel-8.1-x86_64-dvd.iso file as free using this link

2. Create Bootable Pendrive/DVD

Create a bootable drive using rhel-8.1-x86_64-dvd.iso file.

Make sure your PenDrive/DVD has 16GB of size.

3. Boot Menu

Insert DVD or Pendrive into laptop/server then press power button to start. Keep pressing F12(may vary as per your laptop model) key to get the boot menu. Select Pendrive/DVD then press Enter key.

4. Install Red Hat 8.1.0

Select Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1.0, then press Enter key.

5. Language

Select your language as English, then click Continue button.

Now, you can see installation menu with Localization, Software and System options.

6. Time & Date

Click on Time & Date to set your region time & date. Select Region as India and City as Kolkata then click Done button.

7. Software Selection

Click on Software Selection to select your environment. Select as Server with GUI then click Done button.

As per your needs, you can select Minimal Install or Server or Workstation etc., It will install all the dependency packages while installing operating system as per our selection.

You can select the additional server packages like FTP,NTP, NFS etc.,

8. File System Partitions

Click on Installation Destination to create LVM partitions. Click Custom under Storage Configuration then click Done button.

Click on Click here to create them automatically button, to create default partions.

Click one by one server Partitions, then customize mount point, capacity, Type, File System etc.,

If /home not created, you must create a /home mount point by clicking + button.

Enter Mount Point as /home and Desired Capacity size as per your configuration in MB or GB. Then click Add Mount Point button

/home mount point is listed in system partitions.

Options:

  • You can change file System as EXT4
  • You can create a new partition with new mount point
  • Increase ot Decrease of partition size

Note: /boot mount point should be minimum 1GiB

Once you made all changes, click Done button.

Click on Accept Changes button.

9. Network & Hostname

Click on Network & Hostname option then Enter server name in HostName field, then click Apply button.

Click Configure button to setup IPv4 of server.

You can do IPv4 settings after the installation as well.

10. System Purpose

Click System Purpose to set a Role, service level and usage of server.

Check below screenshot and select as per your need or ignore by clicking Not Specified option.

11. KDUMP

Click on KDUMP, you can increase or decrease kdump value in MB.

12. Root Password

Click on Root Password option.

Enter root password on both Root Password and Confirm input fields then click Done button.

13. User Creation

Click on User Creation

Enter Full Name, UserName, Password and Confirm Password input fields then click Done button.

You can configure user with specific User/Group ID and Group Membership.

You can ignore it to create as per our details entered on user creation page.

14. Reboot Server

Remove you installation media(Pendrive/DVD) and click on Reboot button to restart your server.

15. Initial Setup

Click on License Information to accept license.

Click checkbox on I accept the license agreement then click Done button.

16. Subscription Manager

You can this step, if you don't want to activate redhat license.

17. User Login Page

All set to login with Redhat 8.1 Operating sysytem.

You can now login to your new Red Hat Linux 8.1 environment and perform other system tasks.
